DEFINITION: This position performs all duties and functions pertaining to aircraft rescue and firefighting. Supervises a shift of firefighters as assigned. Serves as first in command of rescue and firefighting operations in the absence of the Assistant Fire Chief. Performs related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Supervises, directs, plans, and coordinates the activities of an assigned shift of airport firefighters. Assists the Assistant Fire Chief in management of the department. Conducts performance evaluations of assigned personnel. Performs assigned administrative or technical duties pertaining to personnel training. Reports needed repair and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment. Maintains and submits daily activity and incident reports. Conducts fuel farm and fuel truck inspections. Performs daily station duties. Assists in the coordination and conduct of fire and accident prevention programs including training of personnel and tenants, and inspection of airport facilities. Responds to airport emergency situations both on-duty and off-duty as directed. Assures compliance with the Airport Emergency Plan and airport safety matters as set forth in FAR Part 139.
QUALIFICATIONS: Five years experience as an airport firefighter. Must be certified as a firefighter by the State of Florida and maintain such current certification at all times. Employee must by physically fit and be certified as drug free. Thorough knowledge of the principles, procedures and equipment used in modern firefighting and prevention for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting. Must have the ability to interface and effectively communicate with Airport staff, tenants, governmental entities, and the general public. Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
MISCELLANEOUS REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment drug testing as well as periodic testing in accordance with airport policy; must pass a 10-year, fingerprint-based, criminal history records check as required by the Transportation Security Administration.
